FILM REVIEW: "TRANSFORMERS 2: Rise of the Fallen"
By Rachel Galvin
Michael Bay not only has managed to make an over-100-million-dollar-movie in the opening weekend, but he has managed to make a film that is worth the price of the ticket.
Yes, the metal against metal clashing of mega-sized robots is nothing but a colorful blur, leaving the audience not sure what robot is which, especially in the beginning, and the orange smoke-filled battle field does go on a bit long. But, somewhere between the smoke and reflective metal are some funny and memorable moments that make the film work.
The most impressive interaction was between and involving the parents of Sam (Shai Le Beouf). Given what they had to work with (a very shallow script), the acting was extremely well-played, especially during a moment between father and son. Yes, the "pot scene" was a bit overdone with the mother. LeBeouf did a great job as usual and Megan Fox was merely eye-candy, although she had one challenging scene she pulled off where she covered her mouth, held her breath and tears ran down her baby blues as the robots passed by.
There were some laugh out loud moments and interesting context given the Egyptian symbols, although it did prove weaker than one might expect from the trailer.
The worst scene was when Lebeouf visits some robots "off-planet." Talk about cheese factor. You'll know when you see it.
There are certainly plenty of hot girls and robotic action but there is also plenty of foul language (unnecessary foul language) and sexual connotations.
Then, there is the issue of the jive talking robots. I don't think the "race card" is unfairly said here. One robot has a gold tooth! It was almost passable until they said they could not read. That put this duo over-the-edge into "oh no they didn't" territory.
Overall, I enjoyed the movie, which I didn't expect at all.
