An online magazine & social networking portal for the filmmaking community

Last night, we cast the film "The Trap." Although I am a lead actor, I also am engaged in the behind the scenes work and the director, D.S., kindly has given my production company, Raven Productions, a chance to be a part of the process. We saw a small group of excellent actors and were very happy with what we found.

We had some technical difficulties with sound on the very first audition, otherwise, it was smooth sailing. Most actors read for several characters. We were casting for five male roles. It was interesting because by the end of the night, two characters ethnicities were changed. That is what happens in movie-making. Sometimes, the writer, who is also D.S. Ullery, can't see something about a film until he actually sees it read and this was the case. It also has to do with the excellent acting skills of those who read for the part. It made a big difference.

We also witnessed what makes for a good and bad audition when it comes to etiquette. Actors, always be friendly to those in the room, smile, be polite and energetic. Follow direction, speak clearly, have confidence. If they ask you to read for something else, take the opportunity. If you need a few minutes, say so. Get into the role, use as much energy as possible and ask questions about the character. Listen for cues from the director as to where this is taking place and the type of character you are portraying.

It isn't just the audition itself that matters, but also the demeanor when you aren't "on." The director has to feel that they can work with you and like you enough to spend the sometimes 10 hours per day or more on set with you.

Because this particular group has made so many films together, we get a bit slap happy at times, which is a lot of fun. But, we all take the filmmaking process very seriously. It is our passion and we expect others involved to be the same. Especially if you are involved in a film that is low to no budget, that means that the people are doing it because they love it. That is the best. Of course, money is great, too. But the friendships I have made with this group of guys is priceless and I am proud to be a part of their next picture.
