The Golden Globes Wrestle with the Envelope & Go to the Dogs
By Rachel Galvin
Well, the 66th Golden Globes Awards are over and the results are in. "Slumdog Millionaire" was the big winner, winning Danny Boyle a best director nod. It also won best score, best screenplay and best drama. "Vicky Cristina Barcelona" won Best Musical or Comedy.
A big surprise was best actor, which passed over the likes of Sean Penn, Brad Pitt and the others to give the award to the re-emerged Mickey Rourke ("The Wrestler"), who chose this moment in the spotlight to show off 'an inspired wardrobe choice' and give thanks to his dogs, among other things. (Personal commentary aside, perhaps this will bring back this actor into the forefront and, hopefully, mean some great films from him in the future).
Kate Winslet made off like a bandit, winning two awards-- one for Best Actress in "Revolutionary Road," the other for Best Supporting Actress in "The Reader." She got lucky being given these two great scripts.
The annoying optimist in "Happy Go Lucky" was played by Brit Sally Hawkins, who won an award for her performance. The best actor in the same category (Musical or Comedy) was Colin Farrell for his role in "In Bruges." He was so shocked by his win that he commented that the vote count "must have been conducted in Florida."
Also bringing Florida to the spotlight, Laura Dern won Best Supporting Actress in a Miniseries or Motion Picture Made for Television for her role as our very own Katherine Harris in "Recount," which, by the way, starred Carole Wood, local indie actress, as Tipper Gore (I had the pleasure of working with Carole on the short film "Sugarmommy.")
As anticipated, Heath Ledger won Best Supporting Actor. This was a much-deserved win, especially going against the others listed in his category. (Although Robert Downey Jr. gets a nod from me just for having the guts to play a black man-- loved him in "Iron Man" too!).
Also anticipated, the epic "Wall-E" won best animated feature.
Spielberg won the Cecil B. DeMille Achievement Award.
I won't go through all the wins. But this is a quick run down on the Golden Globes. Next up: The Oscars!
