My Top Ten for 2008
By Cinema Dave Montalbano
Despite the phenomenon success of "The Dark Knight,"
Iron Man" and "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the
Crystal Skull," box office was down for 2008. The truth is
that consumers have changed their movie-going behavior
because of [the economy.]
Despite the move to Blu Ray, consumers are not jumping on the band wagon yet. Overall, people are waiting for the latest releases on DVD. Yet, people are willing to pay a little more money to see some flicks and enjoy the communal experience [and possibly the 3-D action]. IMAX has become more important to the marketing mix for blockbuster motion pictures.
The 2008 Top Ten list is my most varied list of titles. Some of these unrecognizable titles are either on DVD or will be on the big screen in the not-to-distant-future. Either way, this year’s Top Ten List will either provide a good story, some interesting characters or just pure entertainment;
DAVE'S TOP TEN:
Young@Heart
WALL-E
Play the Game
Mongol
Man on Wire
Kit Kittredge An American Girl
Iron Man
The Fall
The Dark Knight
Cadillac Records
Honorable Mention: Vince Vaughn's Wild West Comedy Show, U2 3D, The Spiderwick Chronicles, Smart People, The Slice of Life, The Lucky Ones, How the Garcia Girls Spent their Summer, Doubt, The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian, Bart got a Room
The 2009 movie releases are predicable, featuring titles based on old television shows (Star Trek, Transformers 2: Revenge of the Fallen, Land of the Lost) or literature (Watchmen, X-Men Origins: Wolverine, Angels & Demons). In terms of animated originality,
DreamWorks will release Monsters vs. Aliens while Pixar/Disney will screen Up. Both previews have been well-received and parents should expect to spend some money in 2009 on toys based on these movies.
Last, but not least, I will be publishing my first book in 2009, [if all goes well] hopefully before June --The Adventures of Cinema Dave will feature nine years of movie reviews, a chronology of interviews and untold stories yet published.
