Independent Streak

An online magazine & social networking portal for the filmmaking community

It seems all Hollywood wants to talk about is who is preggers or who popped and I am sick of it. Are Ben and Jen at it again? Looks like buddy Matt beat them to it .... Who's the princess -- Suri or Shiloh?

For Gods sake, even unlikely suspects like Clay Aiken and Ricky Martin are impregnating these days. Is the urge to merge that prevalent?

Am I the only one who doesn't ooh and ahh at the pretty pastels and matchy matchy outfits. It is akin to the dog in a purse craze to me. Are kids just accessories? When your numbers decline, does the offspring make up for it? And if you don't have any, do you invent some ... hmmmm, a story about Madonna possibly adopting again, said to be false.

WHO CARES???

Why oh why can't tinsel town get out of the gutter, off of the flash of it all and get to the nitty gritty, the meat and potatoes and showcase the real art. The art of Hollywood is not in the "What are you wearing." It's not even in the "What charity do you support" and it's certainly not in the "And Baby makes three..."

It IS about filmmaking. It's about the art of filmmaking, the blood, sweat and tears that go into creating something new, bold and different and sharing your vision with the world. It's about finding the dream team to deliver, getting all the right ingredients and cooking up the best damn movie you can concoct. That is what it is about and that is what I want to know about.

How did they do it? How did they select their actors? How did they choose that plot line? How did they find that location? What motivates them to continue? Who inspired them? What are those tricks of the trade? That is the stuff people don't want to talk about. Instead of showing off their new cufflinks, imagine if directors shared what they new and inspired brand new generations of filmmakers. Imagine if it wasn't the same actors doing the same plot lines over and over again, but if we had real creativity.

Instead, we get "Ohh... goo goo ga ga... look whose pregnant again... is that, could it be a bump? I think I see a bump." Give me a break!!!!

Wow man. Ha-ha. You said it. Very funny, but sadly true.

Yeah, the baby coverage is pretty repellent. I think the lowest point was the entire sickening run the media had when the paternity of the late Anna Nicole Smith's baby was questioned. That was positively grotesque. I hope that kid never has to see any video nor read any of the articles written about that mess when she's old enough to comprehend what happened.

I'll also go you one further..other qualms I have coming out of Hollywood/celebrity coverage:

Reducing names to one nonsensical compound word : ie Bennifer, Brangelina, TomKat, et al. What the hell? Is our command of the English language so far gone in this country that we can't take the time to incorporate a few extra syllables and use the appropriate symbols to spell out two complete names? No wonder illiteracy is still a thorn in our side.

Celebrity trainwrecks: If I read or hear one more word/broadcast about Brittney, Miley, Lindsay, Amy Winehouse, Maddona and their sex lives/addictions/parenting faux pas/hideous appearance at last night's party du jour/ tacky magazine shoots/ weight gain or profane rants, I may be forced to track down the offending journalist (and I use that term lightly) , bind them to a tree and proceed to violate them in uncomfortable places utilizing a tuning fork and some liquid smoke.

Sadly, given the masses' insatiable appetite for microanalyzing every single aspect of the lives of the people whom they have made famous (in an ongoing effort to experience the vicious thrill of knocking them back down to earth when said microanalysis uncovers the inevitable skeletons) , we will undoubtedly be fored to cope with the existence of this sort of crass exploitation for the forseeable future.
