Independent Streak

An online magazine & social networking portal for the filmmaking community

The Toronto Film Fest has been yet another example of picky distributors when it comes to independents. Evidently, the numbers at the box office do not please.

The movie "Che" (starring Benicio Del Toro) due to its length and subtitles was too risky for some, but it was picked up by the Independent Film Channel (IFC), which has been known to pick up smaller films. Originally, Magnolia wanted it, but didn't want it to be released in two separate films, which IFC agreed to do. (Although IFC may only offer a minimal advance and a smaller budget for marketing, they are certainly a viable alternative for exposure when the studios refuse to pick up your product). Meanwhile Soderberg (director) is now looking to do a biopic on Liberace.

Also "Hurt Locker" was picked up by Summit and, surprisingly, the Mickey Rourke film "Wrestler" was picked up by Fox Searchlight. Many other films got left in the lurch this run.
