Palm Beach International Film Festival begins

The Palm Beach International Film Festival (PBIFF) began its 19th year with a showing of "Belle" at Boca Cinemark. There was a red carpet out front before the events began and a party upstairs at Bogart's after (with another red carpet of sorts). Guests enjoyed music by The Sheffield Brothers band and a selection of vodka drinks sponsored by Tito's Vodka. Over 165 films will be shown throughout the fest, which runs through April 10, from 42 different countries and over 90 filmmakers in attendance. For more details on fest, visit www.pbifilmfest.org. Pictured below: Director Ian Vernon ("The War I Knew") and friend pose on red carpet.

INTERVIEW: Director Ian Vernon, "The War I Knew"tag:independentstreak.ning.com,2014-04-07:2144821:BlogPost:541622014-04-07T03:30:00.000ZRachel Galvinhttps://independentstreak.ning.com/profile/2yohc69vyxgjp

Following the success of Ian Vernon's second feature, the award-winning comedy "Best Little Whorehouse in Rochdale," he followed up with a drama, a story about World War II called "The War I Knew." This character driven piece set in the midst of war involves an 18-year-old solider finding himself the lone survivor of one battle before running into a ragtag group of fellow soldiers. They end up capturing an SS officer that further tests the relationship between the new comrades as they slowly find their way toward home.

His video and photographic images have exposed animal suffering and as a scriptwriter, director and editor. Tim has been awarded for his animal protection documentaries, advertisements and training videos. He has co-authored many reports and articles and helped draft animal protection legislation. Lion Ark is his first feature film.

He directs and appears in the documentary Lion Ark as Vice President and co-founder (along with wife Jan Creamer) of Animal Defenders International (ADI).

His film "Lion Ark" tracks the journey the group takes to rescue 25 lions from a life of torturous conditions in Bolivia's circuses. The group helped to put an end to circuses in this country and in others, and the rescued lions were sent to a Wildlife Refuge in Colorado. This is just one of the many animal rescues they have completed.

Banks Helfrich has been everything from a professional triathlete to a circus clown, a Harpo Marx look-alike at Universal Studios (Orlando FL) to David Letterman's the Ball Guy from "Is this Anything?" He is also a filmmaker, and writes and directs a feature every two years. In 2009, "the donut, the balloon and the lifesaver" created buzz on the film festival circuit. "the ah of life," has captured attention with the Audience Choice Award at UNA George Lindsey Film Festival, Best Feature at Independents' Film Festival, Best Trailer at Fearless Film Festival and acceptances at San Antonio Film Festival and Woods Hole Film Festival. These are just examples. All his films certainly have captured an audience.

His newest project is a very cerebral but funfilm called "fat, dumb and happy." The film follows Walter Quill, a writer who thinks he is God and who has a wife who pays more attention to the dogs than she does to him (or her kids). His kids similarly ignore him. Meanwhile, he has six weeks to get a finished best-selling novel to his agent. By looking at his own life, he is able to create a more happy reality in his own head. The juxtaposition between fantasy and reality leads him to ask the hard questions, like "Why is happiness so elusive" and "how do I brush too hard when I'm using a soft bristle brush?"

On Saturday, March 22, Bubba’s East Coast Rods and Customs will host the grand opening of their new facility at the Pennock Industrial Park on Indiantown Road in Jupiter from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. One of the main attractions will be the ORIGINAL 1978 Trans Am given to Burt Reynolds after filming the forever popular Smokey and the Bandit movie.

The car, which is owned by Rick Schmidt of National Parts Depot (NPD), is normally showcased in the NPD Museum in Ocala. Because of his respect and admiration for Tom and Bubba Lloyd, Schmidt is bringing the Bandit’s car south to Jupiter. This is a once in a lifetime chance for Burt Reynolds fans to see the automobile that secured a place in history for the American muscle car. Also on hand will be Supermodel Layla Von Athey, who frequently brings a touch of beauty and elegance to the pages of "Hot Rod Deluxe" magazine.

Compliments of Rick Rodriquez and Dave Hall of the Bandit Run, the Smokey and the Bandit trailer and two police cars from the movie will also be on display. Under the direction of Mark Sharone, members of Southeast Rods and Customs Club, the Corvette Club of the Palm Beaches and the Stingray Corvette Club will show off their beautifully maintained hot rods and muscle cars.

Bringing his signature sound to the main stage will be Palm Beach County’s busiest singer/guitarist bluesman Joey George. Joey has performed and/or recorded with Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Blues Traveler, Spin Doctors and John Fogarty… just to name a few. He is a regular at a number of local nightspots including B.B. Kings.

Bubba’s East Coast Rods and Customs, with a second facility in Fairfax, Virginia, is well known across the country and internationally for its code of honor in dealing with customers. The company is run by the father/son team of Tom and Bubba Lloyd, the hosts of the popular TV show "Hot Rod Reality." Bubba, 25, is an exceptionally talented master craftsman and designer, with a reputation for building some of the best cars in the industry. A second show, which will be filmed at their Jupiter facility, will soon begin airing on a major national television network.

The event, which pokes fun at The Oscars, benefits the UKares Foundation charity. Ten teams of ten people have three weeks to make spoofs about the nominated films for Best Feature at the Academy Awards in hopes to win top honors. This year's comedy event will be hosted by "Glee's" Alex Newell. Celebrity judges include Jim Piddock ("Best in Show," "Epic Movie"), Owain Yeoman ("The Mentalist") comeidan Jennifer Elise Cox and World renowned DJ Paul Oakenfold, who will be judging the original scores of the films.

This event, hosted by Brits in LA and sponsored by Jaguar North America, was inspired by the Michel Gondry movie 'Be Kind, Rewind" starring Jack Black and Mos Def, in which they have to recreate blockbuster movies on a shoestring budget. [The concept is similar to the Swede Fest].

Co-creator Craig Robert Young said, "It just seemed like a great way to have some fun with other people in the industry and raise some money for a good cause. We aren't poking fun at the Oscars, so much as we are paying respect with a cheeky nudge and a wink in our very British humourous way."

On Feb. 7, Chris Alonso's "Not For Human Consumption" had its in-theater release. It was shown at AMC Aventura 24 on this day several times to sold-out crowds.

The film stars Michael Rispoli, Nick Thurston, Maddy Curley, Justin Sims and so many other national and local talent. For a full cast list, visit IMDB. It is also based on a true story. It follows Jay Trotta, a man who ends up in prison for shooting his drug dealer and is looking for a new lease on life. When he finds an opportunity to get a leg up, he grabs at the chance. The winfall that falls into his lap is a new "herbal incense" that has similar properties as smoking marijuana ... and it's"legal." The money pours in, but his relationships fall apart as he brings his friend into the business, but keeps his girlfriend in the dark. Torn between his conscience and his wallet, he is forced to make some hard choices when the going gets tough.

Alonso's film has already won several awards on the film festival circuit and received a positive response. Alonso has been working in film in the South Florida area for many years behind the scenes, as a cinematographer, grip, gaffer, you name it, or in front of the camera as an actor in films like "Lost Angel." He has done several short films, but this is his first feature.

Local Florida actors are mourning the loss of long-time agent Sherry Reichert, who passed away on Feb. 4.

Known as a straight-shooter, Reichert always has told it like it is. Before becoming an agent, she also was a dancer, a singer and an actor. She played in theatrical performances like "Fiddler on the Roof" and "How to Succeed in Business," and other musicals and films. See her acting work in "Summer Job," directed by Paul Madden (1989). She began as an extra and went on to help a lot of background actors in their quest to get on set. She enjoyed being behind the scenes and coaching actors. She is known as a tough cookie with a heart. She was as strong as they come and has battled illness, including three different types of Cancers. She continued to put a smile on her face and soldier on. Those who had the pleasure to meet her were charmed by her honesty, integrity and pure grit.

She owned Miami Talent from 1982 for 10 years before becoming a Talent Coordinator at Famous Faces Entertainment and eventually moving on to be owner at Exceptional Events Entertainment.

With over 30 years of experience, she booked actors in all the major projects from shows back in the 80s to more current productions like "The Glades" and "Burn Notice."

Sherry was one of the first agents in South Florida for I.S. Founder Rachel Galvin, who says, "Sherry was tough from the get-go. I wasn't sure what to make of her when I first met her. I had just moved from LA to Florida in 2000 and didn't get back into acting until 2004. I didn't know the Florida system. Sherry looked at my pics and immediately said my shots were all wrong and I needed Bob Lasky. She seemed harsh, and I had just left LA where everyone was harsh. She could stand up to them easily. The look she gave me, I thought for sure she would say 'No thanks.' Instead, she took me on... with pictures and all. "Yeah, we can use them," she finally said. She asked me if I spoke Spanish. I did my best Spanish Improv. She seemed to approve. Although I talked to her or to her assistants when being booked for jobs, I didn't go into the office [which was a bad idea] and, eventually, stopped doing extra work, so I wasn't really using her services anymore. She saw me probably four years later. I thought she had forgotten me. But she remembered me immediately. She even remembered the details of our conversation to a tee. Every time I saw her at an event, she hugged me and remembered me well. She will be missed."

A celebration of Sherry Reichert's life will take place at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 6, 2014 at Star of David Funeral Chapel of the Palm Beaches, 9321 Memorial Park Rd., West Palm Beach, FL 33412 | 561-627-2277 .
INTERVIEW: Idit Cebula, director of "Rue Mandar"tag:independentstreak.ning.com,2014-01-29:2144821:BlogPost:538032014-01-29T07:32:03.000ZRachel Galvinhttps://independentstreak.ning.com/profile/2yohc69vyxgjp

"Aftermath," originally titled "Poklosie," directed by Wladyslaw Pasikowski, is listed as being a film about a Polish man who returns home after the death of his father and unearths a secret about the now-deceased Jewish residents of his village. But the plot is far more complicated. Interwoven like an intricate puzzle, this story in Polish with English subtitles is magnificently told.

From the gritty cinematography to the foreboding music, this film keeps you on the edge of your seat from the very beginning. It begins with a man traveling from Chicago to Poland, but we do not know why, but we get the feeling something is amiss. Little by little, more is revealed. He is back in Poland, where he has not been for 20 years, to visit his brother. But he finds his sibling to be in dire circumstances over a choice he has made and the whole town is up in arms. He begins to see there is more to the story and wonders what the neighbors are hiding.

The journey to the truth is harrowing with dangers at every turn. The final discovery is shocking and heartbreaking. This piece grabs you in the beginning and by the end it has a firm holding grip leaving you almost breathless, not wanting to turn away for a moment for fear of missing something, a clue to the answer. The stomach churning conclusion will keep you thinking long after.

Maciej Stuhr and Ireneusz Czop brilliantly portray the brothers. Everyone in the cast does a wonderful job telling this tale, which is surprisingly based on a true story. I think this film is best watched without knowing the back story ... to add more intrigue to the twist ending. Just be aware, saying there is blatant anti-semitism is putting it mildly, but it is an essential part of the story.

But it is not a choice of one or the other. When we protect the weakest or the most vulnerable, whether it is animals or people, we all gain. That’s how we shape our world…understanding our connection with other species, and our place on this planet, is the next step in human evolution.”

Tim Phillips, Director of Lion Ark: “We are honored to have been nominated for this award. Lion Ark is a film about respect for people and animals so we are really pleased to receive this acknowledgement. In this film, you see the worst of humanity, but also humanity at its best. It is an empowering film that shows that people can make a difference. Lion Ark shows how animal protection is a vital part of the fabric of social justice, where human society draws a line as to what is, and is not, acceptable.”

The film shows how Bolivians got behind the rescue mission and in one scene a Bolivian Government official makes references to how some international non-governmental organizations can be heavy handed when working in poorer countries. Wildlife official David Kopp says: “Some international organizations think this is a poor country, a small, corrupt country and you can come in here and do what you like, but that’s not true. We’re looking for respect and coordinated work. Then we can do big things, like this.”

In addition to Lion Ark the other five nominees in the Outstanding International Motion Picture category are:
War Witch; Call Me Kuchu; La Playa D.C.; High Tech, Low Life.

Nominated for Outstanding Motion Picture are:
12 Years a Slave; Lee Daniel’s The Butler; Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom; Fruitvale Station; The Best Man Holiday.

Members of the NAACP have until February 14th to vote for the nominated movies for the Image Awards, with the award ceremony taking place on the 21st and 22nd of February. The glittering awards ceremony in Los Angeles has, in the past, been hosted by luminaries such as Denzel Washington, Diana Ross, Cuba Gooding, Jr. and Whitney Houston.
FLIFF Awards!tag:independentstreak.ning.com,2013-11-12:2144821:BlogPost:537772013-11-12T09:25:14.000ZRachel Galvinhttps://independentstreak.ning.com/profile/2yohc69vyxgjp
