Haunted by his father, who was an actor who drank and gambled away his money, and concerned about his mother, who has Cancer, he does everything he can to make his dream possible.
Q. Why did you choose to do the cartoon animation in the beginning? How was that created and how long did it take?

A. The cartoon animation was inspired by the Filipino comics and graphic novels that are still popular among the working Joes in the Philippines. Most of the local comics usually depict the dreams and aspirations of every Filipino, be it in love, career, or simply friendship. Since Toto’s story is like a comic book fable, I decided to use it to set up the tone and visual aesthetic of the whole film. This decision also opened the opportunity for us to solve one key issue: How do we establish the U.S. embassy without having to resort to guerrilla filmmaking? As in most countries, shooting the facade of the U.S. Embassy (or any embassy at that) is prohibited, so my team and I had to find a creative way of introducing the location. To create those cartoon animations, I chose specific shots in the film that we captured as a still photo. Then our artist recreated it as a comic book artwork. It took around a week or two to make those cartoon animations.

Q. How long did it take to shoot and did you find it easier or more difficult shooting in the Philippines versus the U.S?

A. The principal photography took 17 days. In the Philippines, the lack of infrastructure and best practices in film production posed as a big challenge for me. Fortunately, I’ve had the opportunity to work on an independent film in the Philippines prior to my directing debut. That experience definitely prepared me for the challenges ahead. In addition, I had a crew who was eager to learn new things. So my cinematographer (Clarissa Delos Reyes), as well as my sound recordist (Shiho Miyazawa) and I — all U.S.-trained filmmakers — took the opportunity to share our knowledge with them.

Q. What drew you to do this film in the first place and what was your favorite part about filming it?

A. As an immigrant myself, I am deeply attracted to Toto’s story for the way it speaks to the tension between integrity and compromise in the journeys of all outsiders. In moments of self-doubt, ‘do you give up or do you soldier forward in pursuit of the dream?’ is a question that, as a filmmaker in a new land where I was a complete unknown, I was constantly forced to ask myself time and time again.

Q. How did you get your cast?

A. Except for Ms. Bibeth Orteza (Remedies) — who I’ve worked with in one of my short films — it was my first time to work with everyone else. For the lead actor (Sid Lucero), I saw him in one of his films that played in San Diego Asian Film Festival. His performance in that film struck me and I knew that I wanted to work with him sometime in the future. Then came "Toto". I was looking for an actor who would have the depth to make the character more three-dimensional. That’s when Sid’s name came into the picture. Most of the people I talked to found my choice to be quite odd (or “interesting”, at best), due to the fact that Sid is known as a dramatic actor in the Philippines who has never done a dark comedy. The rest of the actors were recommended to me by my local producing team (Bibeth Orteza, Manet Dayrit, Ruth Racela, Tess Fuentes). I just had to audition them and decide if they fit the role or not. As for Blake Boyd, he was recommended to me by my co-writer/co-producer Donald Martin.

Q. What awards has the film won?

A. The film received eight nominations in seven categories and won four in the recent Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF) New Wave Section. The awards were: Special Jury Prize, Best Director, Best Supporting Actor (Thou Reyes as Yam) and Best Supporting Actress (Bibeth Orteza as Remedios).

Q. Have you won awards as well personally?

A. Aside from the MMFF Best Director and Special Jury Prize, I’ve also won the Directors Guild of America Best Asian American Filmmaker prize for my short film "Pagpag" (The Refuse). The same short also won the Silver Medal from the New York Festivals International Television and Film Awards, and the Best Dramatic Short from the NewFilmmakers Los Angeles. Currently, the short film is now airing in KQED and all PBS-affiliated stations across the U.S.

Q. Anything that was particularly difficult during filming?

A. The opening scene was one of the more challenging scenes to shoot. Around 95 percent of the people in that scene were spot talents pulled from that neighborhood. From the students walking on that alley to the kids playing with soap bubbles and street games … to the gamblers and the people passing by, they were all extras that needed to be blocked and choreographed. Coordinating and blocking them was quite a challenge because they were all non-actors who had never been in front of the camera. And because that whole sequence from the alley to the title credit was originally shot as a long moving master with no cuts, I had to rehearse them a couple of times so that every element, including the background talents (aka the non-actors), were in synch. Another scene that was quite a challenge to me was the love scene with Toto (Sid Lucero) and Eve Porter (Liza Diño). Given the nature of the scene, it was very important for me to make my actors feel comfortable and safe. I didn’t want them to feel exploited. Fortunately, Sid and Liza were very professional and collaborative. I’d explain to them the blocking and my intention for every shot, and they would throw in their ideas to help execute my vision. One other challenge was shooting the scenes of the Jelson Bay, a.k.a. Fracisco “The Toothless Hobbit”. Jelson was so funny in all his scenes that every time the camera is on him, everyone just finds it hard to control themselves from cracking up while the camera rolls.

Talk with Screenwriter Donald Martin Q. What made you decide to create this film?

A. I first met Francisco Castelo [my husband] in the year 2000 in Los Angeles. He used to regale me with stories from Manila – of his life there and his own experiences, as well as the lives and the experiences of other people that he knew, and stories that he had heard about how difficult it was to get a visa to go to the United States, and about the lengths that people would go to in order to get such a coveted “tourist visa”. I remember thinking, all those years ago: Wow. There are the elements here for an amazing movie. And, so, eventually, Francisco and I collaborated on writing the story -- upon which this screenplay is based.

Q. What was it like working with a director and bringing it to life?

A. I have had over 45 films produced in my career so far, for the big and small screen. Working with director John Paul Su was a wonderful experience. We had a great sense of collaboration and creative give-and-take. I had written the original script on my own, but when John Paul entered the process, he brought a sense of magical realism to the story that I had not envisioned. He also brought to the table his own experiences as an immigrant, someone who had a dream about coming to the U.S. I can say, without hesitation, that working with John Paul Su has been one of the best creative collaborations that I have experienced thus far in my career.

Q. What did your husband think?

A. Francisco was truly touched to see that his own story and the stories of so many people he has known were brought to the screen in this film. After seeing the first cut, he realized just how universal this story was and how any immigrant to the U.S. would be able to identify with [it]. He believes that this country is a land of immigrants, and that the story of "Toto" is the story of all of us. To him, that is the American Dream. For me, it is the dream that people from all over the world can share: the aspiration to be a part of something bigger than all of us.

Talk with Actor Blake Boyd

Q. I know you have worked in Philippines before ... What is the experience like as an actor to work there?

A. The experience of making a movie in The Philippines is quite different from making a movie in the U.S. Over there, the hours are longer, there are no unions, and the pace for the actor is much more hectic, since the local actors often race from one set to another. A Filipino actor can work on a TV series at the same that he's making an independent feature, so one must work around such a schedule. That said, the level of focus and commitment of everyone involved in making this film was most impressive. I’ve made three movies in The Philippines and I can say without hesitation that making "Toto" was the best experience of them all. We Americans could learn a thing or two from the intense focus and commitment of my fellow actors in The Philippines.

Q. You have worked on more mainstream films ... What do you see the difference is working on an indie like this versus a mainstream production?

A. Whether a movie is “mainstream” or “indie”, for me, the most important thing is to find the truth in the story. Of course, when you make an indie film, you don’t have the luxury of trailers and all of that stuff, but let’s be honest – none of those things are crucial to making a good movie. It all begins with the story, the screenplay. Then, when you add the director, the crew and the cast, the focus must be on telling the heart of the story, the truth, be it a big studio picture, films that I have made such as "First Kid" and "Rocketman", or a low budget indie film such as "Toto".

Talk with Thou Reyes

Q. Was playing Yam different than other characters you have played in the past?

A. Yes, I've done a lot of firsts in this film. The difference would be the approach they required from me in terms of the comedic part of Yam. It was the situation that made the scene funny. I needed to be open-minded and observant to deliver and yet keep the Filipino traits of Yam intact.

Q. As an actor in film and TV, can you talk about the schedule for filming in the Philipenes?

A. We used to joke that there are no other actors who can function longer than us Filipino actors because that's how we roll -- 24/7 back home. We start rolling in the morning until morning of the next day. It happens both in TV and film shoots. It is a current issue back home due to long-term health effects of such working condition of the entertainment people. Fortunately, JP is trained in the U.S. and his team fully studied the schedule, making this project one of the easiest films that I've done in respect to time.

Q. I know you are debating coming here to the states. What draws you here and what is your ultimate goal?

A. I'm grateful that it is an option for me. It would be any actor's ultimate dream back home to be able to have an opportunity to make it outside the country. Filipinos have the mentality that you really made it if you've been recognized outside, particularly in the U.S., and here I am contemplating if I should try it out. My ultimate goal would be to penetrate the western entertainment industry and make good projects that will challenge, bring out the best in me and entertain any audience of any race and status.

Q. Was there anything specifically difficult for you during the shooting of this?

A. Prior to filming, JP and I had a talk about the intimate scene that I have to do in this film, for it was something new to me and I've never done anything like it. I can't say it was difficult but more of a challenge to make the character of Yam very endearing to the viewers. To connect Yam's coming of age in a society that is heavily influenced by religion is somewhat I carefully constructed.

Talk with actor Carlo Cruz

Q. What was that kiss scene like for you with Thou? How may takes did it take to get it right?

A. The scene with Thou was actually my onscreen kissing debut, as well as my first time kissing another man. Thou and I had developed a rapport since pre-production and in the days leading up to our “big” scene, we would often humour each other about how awkward it would be given our actual relationship as buddies. It was scheduled to be the last scene to be shot in the course of production, so one can only imagine how anxious I was. Given that, we both understood what the scene meant to the film and the audience members who could relate to the characters, and so we were eager to perform the scene with honesty and dignity. Thou and I had agreed that we would get the job done within four takes, but we ended up doing seven more, a total of 11 takes!

Q. Tell me a bit about your background and what you enjoyed most about being a part of "Toto".

A. I started acting six years ago and did mostly independent films and commercials back in the Philippines. I was fortunate enough to study Method Acting at The Lee Strasberg Theatre and Film Institute in New York in 2014 and 2015. I’m currently based in New York where I pursue acting and photography. Being a part of "Toto" was an incredible experience for me. Dreams such as being part of an international film festival, and working with actors whom I looked up to ever since I began, came true. I truly enjoyed working with every member of the production team, which was filled with talented, kind and light-hearted individuals who shared a common goal of telling a story about the beautiful side of humanity which is able to love, dream and persevere.

I asked Donald if I could have the honor and privilege of steering the project and trying to get the film made. Fortunately, he said yes.

Q. What made you want to be a producer in the first place and what makes this project stand out for you? What has been the best part of working on it?

A. I love cinema. It's an exhilarating thrill for me to be able to help those who want to achieve the "American dream" in any way I can. "Toto" gave me the opportunity to do it all, i.e. help in all three categories, and to fulfill my love for my kind of cinema. "Toto" also is showing at the Newport Beach Film Festival April 24 and then will be at the LA Comedy Festival (which runs May 12-22).
Palm Beach International Film Festival begins

The Palm Beach International Film Festival (PBIFF) began its 19th year with a showing of "Belle" at Boca Cinemark. There was a red carpet out front before the events began and a party upstairs at Bogart's after (with another red carpet of sorts). Guests enjoyed music by The Sheffield Brothers band and a selection of vodka drinks sponsored by Tito's Vodka. Over 165 films will be shown throughout the fest, which runs through April 10, from 42 different countries and over 90 filmmakers in attendance. For more details on fest, visit www.pbifilmfest.org. Pictured below: Director Ian Vernon ("The War I Knew") and friend pose on red carpet.

INTERVIEW: Tim Phillips, "Lion Ark"tag:independentstreak.ning.com,2014-04-07:2144821:BlogPost:541652014-04-07T03:57:59.000ZRachel Galvinhttp://independentstreak.ning.com/profile/2yohc69vyxgjp

His video and photographic images have exposed animal suffering and as a scriptwriter, director and editor. Tim has been awarded for his animal protection documentaries, advertisements and training videos. He has co-authored many reports and articles and helped draft animal protection legislation. Lion Ark is his first feature film.

He directs and appears in the documentary Lion Ark as Vice President and co-founder (along with wife Jan Creamer) of Animal Defenders International (ADI).

His film "Lion Ark" tracks the journey the group takes to rescue 25 lions from a life of torturous conditions in Bolivia's circuses. The group helped to put an end to circuses in this country and in others, and the rescued lions were sent to a Wildlife Refuge in Colorado. This is just one of the many animal rescues they have completed.

Banks Helfrich has been everything from a professional triathlete to a circus clown, a Harpo Marx look-alike at Universal Studios (Orlando FL) to David Letterman's the Ball Guy from "Is this Anything?" He is also a filmmaker, and writes and directs a feature every two years. In 2009, "the donut, the balloon and the lifesaver" created buzz on the film festival circuit. "the ah of life," has captured attention with the Audience Choice Award at UNA George Lindsey Film Festival, Best Feature at Independents' Film Festival, Best Trailer at Fearless Film Festival and acceptances at San Antonio Film Festival and Woods Hole Film Festival. These are just examples. All his films certainly have captured an audience.

His newest project is a very cerebral but funfilm called "fat, dumb and happy." The film follows Walter Quill, a writer who thinks he is God and who has a wife who pays more attention to the dogs than she does to him (or her kids). His kids similarly ignore him. Meanwhile, he has six weeks to get a finished best-selling novel to his agent. By looking at his own life, he is able to create a more happy reality in his own head. The juxtaposition between fantasy and reality leads him to ask the hard questions, like "Why is happiness so elusive" and "how do I brush too hard when I'm using a soft bristle brush?"

Following the success of Ian Vernon's second feature, the award-winning comedy "Best Little Whorehouse in Rochdale," he followed up with a drama, a story about World War II called "The War I Knew." This character driven piece set in the midst of war involves an 18-year-old solider finding himself the lone survivor of one battle before running into a ragtag group of fellow soldiers. They end up capturing an SS officer that further tests the relationship between the new comrades as they slowly find their way toward home.

A new generation saw him in films like "Night At The Museum." He even has three films in pre-production ... no word on what will happen now with those productions.

On Tuesday, March 11 at 8 p.m. at the National YoungArts Foundation Campus (2100 Biscayne Blvd., Miami, FL 33137), the National YoungArts Foundation will present the world premiere of “The Way of the Rain Miami” – a collaborative performance art piece by an all-star creative team featuring a special guest appearance by Robert Redford. Directed by Sibylle Szaggars Redford, this unique multidisciplinary show pays homage to Earth and its universal elements through the exploration of light, sound, color and texture. The concept for this one night only event was inspired during Redford’s more than 20 years as an environmental activist and visual artist.

The performance will feature an all-star creative team: all original music composed by co-music director Will Calhoun (Grammy-Award winner and legendary drummer of the rock band, Living Colour) performing on his collection of rare indigenous instruments; co-music director Chuck Palmer (Grammy nominee and musician who has worked with Luciano, Frank Ocean, Evanescence and others) performing on percussion instruments; and co-music director Dave Eggar (YoungArts alumnus, two time Grammy nominee, and musician who has worked with the Who, Josh Groban, Tony Bennett, Beyonce, Paul Simon, and others) performing on cello and piano.

The choreography of another famed YoungArts alumnus, Desmond Richardson, hailed by “The New York Times” as “one of the great dancers of his time,” will be performed amongst stunning 14-foot painted silks by Redford. Lighting by renowned designer Steve Cohen (also designer for Billy Joel, Elton John, Andrea Bocelli, Mariah Carey, Fleetwood Mac and others) and sound by legendary sound engineer Ron Saint Germain (winner of 12 Grammys and 60 gold and platinum albums, who has engineered such legends as Jimi Hendrix, The Rolling Stones, UT, Michael Jackson). There also will be a short film presentation by F. Thomas McBee III, acclaimed video artist, as well as a special performance reading by Academy Award winner and YoungArts Master Teacher, Robert Redford.

Tickets: $500 VIP tickets (includes gold-level seat, pre-show cocktail reception and a post-show cast Meet & Greet), $125 (premium performance seat), $47.50 (mezzanine seat).

The car, which is owned by Rick Schmidt of National Parts Depot (NPD), is normally showcased in the NPD Museum in Ocala. Because of his respect and admiration for Tom and Bubba Lloyd, Schmidt is bringing the Bandit’s car south to Jupiter. This is a once in a lifetime chance for Burt Reynolds fans to see the automobile that secured a place in history for the American muscle car. Also on hand will be Supermodel Layla Von Athey, who frequently brings a touch of beauty and elegance to the pages of "Hot Rod Deluxe" magazine.

Compliments of Rick Rodriquez and Dave Hall of the Bandit Run, the Smokey and the Bandit trailer and two police cars from the movie will also be on display. Under the direction of Mark Sharone, members of Southeast Rods and Customs Club, the Corvette Club of the Palm Beaches and the Stingray Corvette Club will show off their beautifully maintained hot rods and muscle cars.

Bringing his signature sound to the main stage will be Palm Beach County’s busiest singer/guitarist bluesman Joey George. Joey has performed and/or recorded with Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Blues Traveler, Spin Doctors and John Fogarty… just to name a few. He is a regular at a number of local nightspots including B.B. Kings.

Bubba’s East Coast Rods and Customs, with a second facility in Fairfax, Virginia, is well known across the country and internationally for its code of honor in dealing with customers. The company is run by the father/son team of Tom and Bubba Lloyd, the hosts of the popular TV show "Hot Rod Reality." Bubba, 25, is an exceptionally talented master craftsman and designer, with a reputation for building some of the best cars in the industry. A second show, which will be filmed at their Jupiter facility, will soon begin airing on a major national television network.

The event, which pokes fun at The Oscars, benefits the UKares Foundation charity. Ten teams of ten people have three weeks to make spoofs about the nominated films for Best Feature at the Academy Awards in hopes to win top honors. This year's comedy event will be hosted by "Glee's" Alex Newell. Celebrity judges include Jim Piddock ("Best in Show," "Epic Movie"), Owain Yeoman ("The Mentalist") comeidan Jennifer Elise Cox and World renowned DJ Paul Oakenfold, who will be judging the original scores of the films.

This event, hosted by Brits in LA and sponsored by Jaguar North America, was inspired by the Michel Gondry movie 'Be Kind, Rewind" starring Jack Black and Mos Def, in which they have to recreate blockbuster movies on a shoestring budget. [The concept is similar to the Swede Fest].

Co-creator Craig Robert Young said, "It just seemed like a great way to have some fun with other people in the industry and raise some money for a good cause. We aren't poking fun at the Oscars, so much as we are paying respect with a cheeky nudge and a wink in our very British humourous way."

On Feb. 7, Chris Alonso's "Not For Human Consumption" had its in-theater release. It was shown at AMC Aventura 24 on this day several times to sold-out crowds.

The film stars Michael Rispoli, Nick Thurston, Maddy Curley, Justin Sims and so many other national and local talent. For a full cast list, visit IMDB. It is also based on a true story. It follows Jay Trotta, a man who ends up in prison for shooting his drug dealer and is looking for a new lease on life. When he finds an opportunity to get a leg up, he grabs at the chance. The winfall that falls into his lap is a new "herbal incense" that has similar properties as smoking marijuana ... and it's"legal." The money pours in, but his relationships fall apart as he brings his friend into the business, but keeps his girlfriend in the dark. Torn between his conscience and his wallet, he is forced to make some hard choices when the going gets tough.

Alonso's film has already won several awards on the film festival circuit and received a positive response. Alonso has been working in film in the South Florida area for many years behind the scenes, as a cinematographer, grip, gaffer, you name it, or in front of the camera as an actor in films like "Lost Angel." He has done several short films, but this is his first feature.

Local Florida actors are mourning the loss of long-time agent Sherry Reichert, who passed away on Feb. 4.

Known as a straight-shooter, Reichert always has told it like it is. Before becoming an agent, she also was a dancer, a singer and an actor. She played in theatrical performances like "Fiddler on the Roof" and "How to Succeed in Business," and other musicals and films. See her acting work in "Summer Job," directed by Paul Madden (1989). She began as an extra and went on to help a lot of background actors in their quest to get on set. She enjoyed being behind the scenes and coaching actors. She is known as a tough cookie with a heart. She was as strong as they come and has battled illness, including three different types of Cancers. She continued to put a smile on her face and soldier on. Those who had the pleasure to meet her were charmed by her honesty, integrity and pure grit.

She owned Miami Talent from 1982 for 10 years before becoming a Talent Coordinator at Famous Faces Entertainment and eventually moving on to be owner at Exceptional Events Entertainment.

With over 30 years of experience, she booked actors in all the major projects from shows back in the 80s to more current productions like "The Glades" and "Burn Notice."

Sherry was one of the first agents in South Florida for I.S. Founder Rachel Galvin, who says, "Sherry was tough from the get-go. I wasn't sure what to make of her when I first met her. I had just moved from LA to Florida in 2000 and didn't get back into acting until 2004. I didn't know the Florida system. Sherry looked at my pics and immediately said my shots were all wrong and I needed Bob Lasky. She seemed harsh, and I had just left LA where everyone was harsh. She could stand up to them easily. The look she gave me, I thought for sure she would say 'No thanks.' Instead, she took me on... with pictures and all. "Yeah, we can use them," she finally said. She asked me if I spoke Spanish. I did my best Spanish Improv. She seemed to approve. Although I talked to her or to her assistants when being booked for jobs, I didn't go into the office [which was a bad idea] and, eventually, stopped doing extra work, so I wasn't really using her services anymore. She saw me probably four years later. I thought she had forgotten me. But she remembered me immediately. She even remembered the details of our conversation to a tee. Every time I saw her at an event, she hugged me and remembered me well. She will be missed."

A celebration of Sherry Reichert's life will take place at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 6, 2014 at Star of David Funeral Chapel of the Palm Beaches, 9321 Memorial Park Rd., West Palm Beach, FL 33412 | 561-627-2277 .
R.I.P.
"Aftermath," originally titled "Poklosie," directed by Wladyslaw Pasikowski, is listed as being a film about a Polish man who returns home after the death of his father and unearths a secret about the now-deceased Jewish residents of his village. But the plot is far more complicated. Interwoven like an intricate puzzle, this story in Polish with English subtitles is magnificently told.

From the gritty cinematography to the foreboding music, this film keeps you on the edge of your seat from the very beginning. It begins with a man traveling from Chicago to Poland, but we do not know why, but we get the feeling something is amiss. Little by little, more is revealed. He is back in Poland, where he has not been for 20 years, to visit his brother. But he finds his sibling to be in dire circumstances over a choice he has made and the whole town is up in arms. He begins to see there is more to the story and wonders what the neighbors are hiding.

The journey to the truth is harrowing with dangers at every turn. The final discovery is shocking and heartbreaking. This piece grabs you in the beginning and by the end it has a firm holding grip leaving you almost breathless, not wanting to turn away for a moment for fear of missing something, a clue to the answer. The stomach churning conclusion will keep you thinking long after.

Maciej Stuhr and Ireneusz Czop brilliantly portray the brothers. Everyone in the cast does a wonderful job telling this tale, which is surprisingly based on a true story. I think this film is best watched without knowing the back story ... to add more intrigue to the twist ending. Just be aware, saying there is blatant anti-semitism is putting it mildly, but it is an essential part of the story.
